Moles, or nevi as they are medically known, are common skin growths that are typically benign. They can appear at any stage of life, from birth (congenital Moles) to later in life, and vary in appearance from flat to raised, and in color from pink to black. Moles are formed from melanocytes, the skin's pigment-producing cells, and their development can be influenced by sun exposure and genetics. While most Moles are harmless and do not change, it's important for individuals to monitor them for any signs of change that could indicate skin cancer.
At Revelus Dermatology, we emphasize the importance of sun protection and regular skin checks as part of Mole management. Protective measures such as seeking shade during peak sun hours, wearing sun-protective clothing, and applying high SPF sunscreen can minimize harmful UV exposure. Monthly self-examinations are encouraged to track any new or changing Moles.
While benign Moles typically do not require treatment, those that cause cosmetic concerns or discomfort can be safely removed. Our team is here to provide guidance on Mole checks and offer treatment options tailored to your needs.
