Cutaneous Lupus is an autoimmune condition that manifests as red, inflamed areas across the body, particularly sensitive to sunlight. There are three primary forms: acute, subacute, and chronic Lupus. The acute form is known for its distinctive "butterfly" rash across the cheeks, while subacute Lupus features red, round plaques mainly on the trunk and limbs. Chronic discoid Lupus presents as indented red and white patches, usually on the head and neck.
This condition stems from a combination of genetic predispositions, environmental triggers, and in some instances, medication reactions. However, the exact cause of Lupus often remains unidentified, with symptoms fluctuating over time.
At Revelus Dermatology, we understand the complexity of cutaneous Lupus, which can also impact organs such as the joints, kidneys, and lungs. Treatment varies from topical corticosteroids to manage mild cases, to oral and injectable immunosuppressants for more severe autoimmune presentations. We prioritize identifying and removing any potential exacerbating factors to ensure the most effective management of Lupus, aiming for relief from symptoms and a better quality of life for our patients.
