Diagnosis required by a licensed medical professional

Atopic Dermatitis, also known as Eczema, is a common, chronic condition that causes red, itching rashes on the skin. Eczema may occur in any individual and often begins in childhood. Eczema is often seen in individuals with asthma/hay fever and seasonal allergies, and the combination these three conditions is termed the “atopic triad.” Eczema may also be seen in conjunction with food allergies. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Eczema, but it can be managed effectively.

Eczema often begins with intense itching, which can lead to a rash as the skin becomes aggravated by dryness and scratching. Eczema often begins with intense itching, which can lead to a rash as the skin becomes aggravated by dryness and scratching. While eczema can appear anywhere on the body, it is frequently found in skin creases, especially in children. Common areas include the inner arms, behind the knees, and around the eyes.

Some cases of Eczema may appear as subtle scaling and redness or over time, as thick, leathery plaques. Eczema appears in individuals of all ages and is a common cause of rash in young children. In adults, Eczema may be triggered by contact sensitivities. However, any new rash in an adult should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist who can diagnose and treat the condition.

Recognizing the signs early and seeking specialized medical intervention can help manage the condition and prevent recurrent flares. signs + symptoms of eczema

Early detection of Eczema plays a crucial role in managing and treating the condition effectively. At Revelus Dermatology, we’re dedicated to providing you with essential information to recognize the early signs and seek timely treatment.

key characteristics:

  • Appearance: Eczema is characterized by itchy, red, and flaky rashes. In lighter skin, lesions may appear pink or red, while in darker skin, they may be brown, purple, or gray. Affected areas can also become thickened and scaly over time.
  • Location: Commonly affects skin folds such as the inside of elbows, behind the knees, and around the neck and face. It can also appear on the hands, feet, and other body parts prone to dryness or friction.
  • Sensation: The most notable sensation is intense itching, which can worsen at night. Scratching the affected areas can lead to increased inflammation and risk of infection.
  • Evolution: Eczema tends to wax and wane, with periods of flare-ups triggered by environmental factors, stress, or irritants. Over time, chronic Eczema can lead to thickened skin and permanent changes in skin texture and color. It is possible to “grow out” of Eczema when children reach adulthood, although this is not guaranteed and there is no true “cure”.

common eczema questions

FAQ
what is eczema?

Eczema is a common, itchy skin condition leading to a red, flaky rash, often in response to environmental triggers. It’s chronic and runs in families, especially those with allergies.

what causes eczema?

It’s caused by an overactive immune system and a compromised skin barrier, making the skin more prone to inflammation and infection.

who gets eczema?

Eczema commonly affects infants and children and can persist into adulthood. It’s more frequent in people with a family history of Eczema or other allergies.

why treat eczema?

Treatment helps manage symptoms, prevents infections due to scratching, and improves quality of life.

how is eczema treated?

Eczema can be treated in many ways, depending on the severity and locations affected. Treatments include topical and oral medications, steroid injections, biologics, light box therapy and XTRAC excimer laser. Often times, multiple modalities are used in combination to effectively manage Eczema.

can I treat eczema myself?

Sometimes. The mainstay of any treatment for Eczema is diligent moisturization. Keeping the skin moisturized to avoid dryness is paramount. In addition to this basic necessity, many cases of mild Eczema can be treated with over-the-counter medications and identification and avoidance of triggers. These include products such as topical cream corticosteroids or anti-inflammatories. For cases that are irritated, painful, draining or not responding to therapy, it is important to consult with a board-certified dermatologist who can diagnose and treat the condition.

is eczema dangerous?
