Keloids are raised, overgrown scars that develop when the body produces excess collagen during the healing process. Unlike normal scars, keloids can grow well beyond the original wound, leading to thick, raised, and sometimes painful scar tissue. They commonly form after burns, cuts, acne, piercings, or surgical incisions and may cause itching, tenderness, or restricted movement in affected areas.
Keloids can appear anywhere on the body but are most frequently found on the earlobes, chest, shoulders, and cheeks. They are more common in individuals in their 20s and those with a family history of keloid scarring, indicating a genetic predisposition. People with darker skin tones are also at a higher risk.
At Revelus Dermatology in Austin, we focus on prevention, early intervention, and customized treatment plans to minimize keloid growth, improve skin appearance, and relieve discomfort.
