Lipomas are benign, slow-growing lumps made of fat cells that develop beneath the skin. These soft, rubbery, and movable growths are non-cancerous and typically painless. They can range in size from a few millimeters to over 10 cm and do not affect the skin’s surface.
Lipomas commonly appear on the neck, trunk, arms, legs, buttocks, and abdominal wall, while they are rarely found on the head or face. Though most lipomas cause no symptoms, larger ones may press on nerves or restrict movement, leading to discomfort.
The exact cause of lipomas remains unclear, but research suggests possible links to genetics, metabolic conditions, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol.
While lipomas are usually harmless, they can be surgically removed if they become painful, grow rapidly, or cause cosmetic concerns. At Revelus Dermatology in Austin, we provide expert diagnosis and treatment to ensure your peace of mind and skin health.
