Diagnosis required by a licensed medical professional

Lipomas are benign growths made up of mature fat cells. These non-cancerous lumps feel soft and rubbery to the touch and can move freely under the skin without causing any changes to the skin above them. They vary widely in size, ranging from as small as 1-2 mm to as large as more than 10 cm. Lipomas can appear in individuals of any age but are most commonly seen between the ages of thirty and sixty.

Most Lipomas appear on the neck, trunk, limbs, buttocks, and abdominal wall, and are rarely found on the head and neck. Generally, Lipomas cause no symptoms, but larger ones might cause discomfort or pain by compressing nearby nerves or restricting movement.  The cause of Lipomas is still under study, with some links to diabetes, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia possible.   While Lipomas are ... The cause of Lipomas is still under study, with some links to diabetes, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia possible.

While Lipomas are usually harmless and require no treatment, if they grow or cause discomfort, they can be surgically removed to prevent any potential complications. At Revelus Dermatology, we understand the concerns that come with any skin growth and are here to provide the care and advice you need when dealing with Lipomas.

signs + symptoms of lipomas

For Lipomas, a common and benign condition, early identification and awareness are crucial for effective management and reassurance. Here’s an overview to aid in recognition and understanding:

key characteristics:

  • Appearance: Lipomas present as soft, movable lumps beneath the skin, typically without any changes to the skin above them. Their texture is often described as rubbery or doughy.
  • Location: These growths can appear almost anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the neck, trunk, upper arms, thighs, and abdomen. They usually develop where fat cells are present.
  • Sensation: Generally, Lipomas are painless. However, if a lipoma grows large enough to press against nearby nerves, it can cause discomfort or pain, especially if it’s an angiolipoma, which contains blood vessels.
  • Evolution: Lipomas tend to grow slowly over time and might increase in size with overall weight gain. They typically stabilize in size and are unlikely to resolve without intervention.

common lipomas questions

FAQ
what are lipomas?

Lipomas are benign (non-cancerous) tumors made up of fat cells. They typically form under the skin and feel soft and movable.

what causes lipomas?

The exact cause of Lipomas isn’t known, but they may be related to genetic factors or minor injuries.

who gets lipomas?

Anyone can get Lipomas, but they’re more common in adults between the ages of 30 and 60. They can occur in both men and women.

why treat lipomas?

Lipomas are usually harmless, and treatment is not necessary, but they may be removed if they’re painful, growing, or cosmetically concerning.

how are lipomas treated?

Treatment may include surgical removal, which is a straightforward procedure to excise the lipoma entirely from the surrounding tissue.

can I treat a lipoma myself?

No. It’s not recommended to try removing Lipomas yourself. Consult a dermatologist for safe and effective treatment options.

are lipomas dangerous?

No. Lipomas are not dangerous; they’re benign tumors. However, a rapidly growing or painful lump should be evaluated to rule out other conditions.

are lipomas genetic?

Possibly. There might be a genetic component to Lipomas, as they sometimes run in families.

what is the cost of treating lipomas?

Varies. The cost can vary depending on the size and location of the lipoma and the type of treatment required. Surgical removal costs can vary widely based on these factors.

do lipomas return after treatment?

If completely removed, Lipomas typically do not return. However, new Lipomas may form in other areas.

what are the long-term effects of lipomas?

Lipomas generally don’t cause long-term effects unless they press on nerves or restrict movement, in which case removal may be recommended.

do lipomas hurt?

Lipomas are usually painless. However, they may become painful if they grow and press against nearby nerves.

do lipomas go away?

Lipomas do not usually go away on their own. Surgical removal is the most common method to permanently remove Lipomas.
