common acne evaluation questions

FAQ
what does an acne evaluation involve?

An Acne Evaluation is a professional assessment by one of our expert dermatology providers to diagnose the type and severity of acne. It involves examining your skin, discussing your medical history, lifestyle, and any current skincare routines.

how often should i have an acne evaluation?

The frequency of evaluations depends on the severity of your acne and how well it responds to treatment. Your dermatologist will suggest a follow-up schedule. Most follow-ups fall within every 3 to 6 months.

what should i expect during my first acne evaluation?

Expect a thorough examination of your acne prone skin, a discussion about your medical history, and questions about your lifestyle and skincare habits. The provider will also talk about potential treatment options.

why do you recommend sending some of my acne prescriptions to a “specialty pharmacy”?

After years of experience practicing in the specialty of Dermatology, we’ve learned to rely on specialty pharmacies to help our patients get the medications they truly need.

Specialty pharmacies have a broader selection of dermatological medications, including specialized or newly developed treatments not typically available at standard pharmacies. Additionally, they are equipped to provide custom compounding, tailoring medication strengths and combining ingredients specifically for your treatment needs. These pharmacies are also adept at handling insurance complexities and often provide cost assistance for more expensive medications. Furthermore, they offer enhanced patient support services like medication management assistance, refill reminders, and educational resources about acne and its treatments, ensuring a more comprehensive care approach.

We do NOT receive any “kick-backs” from specialty pharmacies.

how should i prepare for my acne evaluation?

It’s best to attend the evaluation without makeup. This allows the dermatologist to accurately assess your skin without any obstructions. Clearly be able to articulate your current skin care regimen – many patients bring in their current products to review.

Photos of your acne’s progression may also be helpful if you have any.

how long does an acne evaluation take?

The length of the evaluation varies but typically takes about 10-15 minutes. This allows enough time for a detailed examination.

will i receive treatment on the same day as my evaluation?

Depending on your specific case, your provider may prescribe medication and/or recommend over-the-counter products during the initial visit.

will an acne evaluation be covered by my insurance?

Coverage varies among insurance providers. It’s important to check with your insurance company to understand the coverage specifics and any out-of-pocket costs. That being said, many insurance plans do cover Acne Evaluations.

can i receive an acne evaluation over telemedicine?

Yes, you can have an Acne Evaluation over Telemedicine. Be sure to upload clear photos as directed before your appointment. During a Telemedicine appointment, we can visually examine your skin through video conferencing, discuss your medical history, lifestyle factors, and current skincare routines. However, keep in mind that while telemedicine is convenient and effective for initial evaluation and follow-ups, certain conditions or severe cases might require an in-person visit for a more detailed examination or specific treatments
