cryosurgery

Cryosurgery, also known as cryotherapy, is a quick, in-office dermatologic procedure that uses extreme cold—typically liquid nitrogen—to safely remove abnormal or unwanted skin tissue. It is most often used to treat actinic keratoses (precancerous lesions), warts, seborrheic keratoses, and certain superficial skin cancers. At Revelus Dermatology in Austin, our board-certified dermatologists provide cryosurgery as a minimally invasive treatment option that is effective, convenient, and requires little to no downtime.*

what to expect*

preparation

Preparation for Cryosurgery is quite simple. The provider will identify a specific lesion(s) that requires treatment. Cryosurgery is often performed on the same day and time as your visit.

procedure

The Cryosurgery procedure itself is quick and straightforward. The provider will aim the Cryosurgery device directly at the lesion to be treated and begin to spray the liquid nitrogen. The procedure itself often only lasts a few seconds on each spot.

aftercare

Detailed instructions will be provided on how to clean and protect the treated area(s). It is usually recommended to keep the sites clean with normal washing. It is common for a blister to form on the area treated with Cryosurgery. Avoid trying to pop or touch the blisters. Vaseline or Aquaphor can be applied in the following days if needed for comfort.

results + next steps

Once the site treated with Cryosurgery heals, the lesion(s) treated should be gone. If there is any residual felt or noticed, we recommend calling our office for re-evaluation. It is important to note that many lesions, such as warts, often take several treatments before complete resolution is possible.

common cryosurgery questions

FAQ
what is cryosurgery?

Cryosurgery is a dermatology procedure that uses extreme cold, usually liquid nitrogen, to freeze and destroy abnormal skin tissue such as precancerous lesions, warts, or skin tags.

does cryosurgery hurt?

Most patients feel a brief stinging or burning sensation (“so cold it burns”). The discomfort usually lasts seconds and fades quickly after treatment.

will cryosurgery leave a scar?

In some cases, treated skin may lighten, darken, or scar. Permanent scarring is rare, especially when performed by a board-certified dermatologist.

what is the molecule used in cryosurgery?

The molecule commonly used in Cryosurgery is liquid nitrogen (LN2). It’s a colorless, odorless gas that, when rapidly cooled, transforms into a very cold liquid that is applied to the skin to achieve freezing temperatures.

what is recovery like after cryosurgery?

Treated areas may blister or scab within 24–48 hours, which is part of normal healing. Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and protect from sun exposure.

how much does cryosurgery cost?

Costs vary based on the number and type of lesions treated. Insurance often covers cryosurgery for medical conditions (like actinic keratoses), but not for cosmetic concerns such as skin tags.

what conditions can cryosurgery treat?

Cryosurgery is commonly used for actinic keratoses, warts, seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, and certain superficial skin cancers.

what is the cost of cryosurgery?

The cost of Cryosurgery can vary based on factors like the number of lesions treated, the type of lesion, the number of sessions needed, and the specific location where the procedure is performed. It’s best to consult with your insurance provider for the specifics of coverage. At Revelus Dermatology, we strive to provide high-quality care and transparency about estimated procedural costs prior to performing Cryosurgery.
