what to expect*

preparation

Preparation for Cryotherapy is quite simple. The provider will identify a specific lesion(s) that requires treatment. Cryotherapy is often performed on the same day and time as your visit.

procedure

The Cryotherapy procedure itself is quick and straightforward. The provider will aim the Cryotherapy device directly at the lesion to be treated and begin to spray the liquid nitrogen. The procedure itself often only lasts a few seconds on each spot.

aftercare

Detailed instructions will be provided on how to clean and protect the treated area(s). It is usually recommended to keep the sites clean with normal washing. It is common for a blister to form on the area treated with Cryotherapy. Avoid trying to pop or touch the blisters. Vaseline or Aquaphor can be applied in the following days if needed for comfort.

results + next steps

Once the site treated with Cryotherapy heals, the lesion(s) treated should be gone. If there is any residual felt or noticed, we recommend calling our office for re-evaluation. It is important to note that many lesions, such as warts, often take several treatments before complete resolution is possible.

common cryotherapy questions

FAQ
what is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy refers to a medical procedure in dermatology where extremely cold temperatures are used to treat various skin conditions, such as lesions, growths, and abnormalities. The freezing agent, often liquid nitrogen, is applied to the targeted area, leading to controlled cell damage and subsequent removal of the treated tissue.

does cryotherapy hurt?

The Cryotherapy procedure uses a spray of liquid nitrogen which itself is very cold. When applied to an area on the skin, liquid nitrogen causes a burning sensation (“so cold it burns”). This is usually tolerable, as it only lasts a few seconds during treatment and dissipates quickly thereafter.

will cryotherapy leave a scar?

It is possible for areas treated with Cryotherapy to have an area of hyper or hypopigmentation left behind. This may be permanent.

what is the molecule used in cryotherapy?

The molecule commonly used in Cryotherapy is liquid nitrogen (LN2). It’s a colorless, odorless gas that, when rapidly cooled, transforms into a very cold liquid that is applied to the skin to achieve freezing temperatures.

what is the cost of cryotherapy?

The cost of Cryotherapy can vary based on factors like the number of lesions treated, the type of lesion, the number of sessions needed, and the specific location where the procedure is performed. It’s best to consult with your insurance provider for the specifics of coverage. At Revelus Dermatology, we strive to provide high-quality care and transparency about estimated procedural costs prior to performing Cryotherapy.
