benefits of referral appointments

benefits of referral appointments

When you are referred to Revelus Dermatology, you can be confident that you have been directed to a trusted and experienced specialist. We work with a wide network of healthcare providers in Austin and beyond to offer collaborative dermatologic evaluation and care.

considerations include:

  • Some insurance plans may limit your choice of dermatologists to those within a specific network, which could affect your access to certain providers.
  • Even with a Referral, there may be additional out-of-pocket costs, depending on your insurance coverage and the treatments recommended.
  • Patients will need to confirm that all necessary paperwork and insurance authorizations are received and processed by our clinic to avoid a scheduling delay.
  • We recommend asking your referring provider to send your medical records prior to your appointment to allow us time to review and prepare.
  • Referral Appointments may be required for referrals to be updated periodically to continue insurance authorization and coverage.

what to expect*

referral initiation

Your primary care provider or another specialist will initiate a Referral to our dermatology practice. This usually involves sending over your medical information along with the Referral request, which may be required for insurance purposes.

If you have self-referred to our office, we will determine if your insurance requires a Referral or insurance authorization in order to be seen. This is common with HMO plans.

scheduling

Once we receive the Referral, our office will contact you to schedule an appointment. We’ll provide available dates and times, and discuss any initial information or preparation needed prior to your visit.

appointment

During your visit, our providers will conduct their consultation and assessment, reviewing the Referral Appointment notes from your physician (if applicable) and discussing your medical history and current concerns to provide a thorough evaluation.

next steps

After your appointment, we’ll communicate any findings and recommendations back to your referring physician. If further treatment is necessary, we’ll coordinate with your healthcare providers to ensure seamless continuity of care and arrange for any follow-up appointments as needed.

common referral appointment questions

FAQ
what does a referral appointment involve?

A Referral Appointment is typically initiated by your primary care provider or a specialist you are currently seeing. This usually involves sending over your medical information along with the Referral request, which may be required for insurance purposes.

If you have self-referred to our office, we will determine if your insurance requires a Referral or insurance authorization in order to be seen. This is common with HMO plans.

will my insurance cover service at your practice with a referral appointment?

Coverage can vary by insurance provider and plan. It is best to check with your insurance company to understand your coverage details. Our office can also assist in determining what services are covered under your plan once a Referral is received. It is important to note the following:

  • Some insurance plans may limit your choice of dermatologists to those within a specific network, which could affect your access to certain providers.
  • Even with a Referral, there may be additional out-of-pocket costs, depending on your insurance coverage and the treatments recommended.
how soon can i schedule an appointment after a referral is placed?

Referral processing times can vary based on insurance pre-authorizations and communication between providers. Pre-authorization involves the referring doctor providing justification for the Referral, which the insurance company must review and approve.

The speed at which the patient provides necessary information and completes any required actions can also influence how long the Referral takes.

Finally, appointment availability can vary, but we prioritize referred patients to ensure timely care. We will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

do i need to bring anything with me for my first appointment?

Please bring a form of photo identification, your insurance card, and any copay required by your insurance. Additionally, it may be helpful to bring any relevant medical records or test results that you have in your possession, even though we will likely receive most information from your referring physician.

will your practice communicate with my referring doctor after my appointment?

Absolutely. We believe in a collaborative approach to care. After your Referral Appointment, we will provide your referring doctor with a detailed report of our findings and the recommended treatment plan to ensure coordinated care moving forward.

can i choose a specific dermatologist from your practice for my referral appointment?

We will do our best to accommodate your request for a specific provider in our practice, depending on their availability and expertise relative to your condition. Please let us know if you have a specific preference when your appointment is being scheduled.

can i be seen self-pay if my hmo insurance plan deems your practice as out-of-network?

Yes. If you are out-of-network, you may choose to be seen as a self-pay patient. For further questions about coverage, contact our office.
