The Skin Biopsy procedure itself is quick and straightforward. The area will first be numbed with an anesthetic agent. Then, the sample of skin will be taken by either the shave, punch or excisional method. Sutures are not necessary for simple shave procedures but may be utilized for deeper biopsies. The procedure itself often only lasts a few minutes.

common skin biopsy questions

FAQ
what is a skin biopsy?

A Skin Biopsy is a medical procedure conducted by a trained dermatology provider where a small sample of skin is removed to be examined under a microscope. This analysis aids in accurately diagnosing a wide range of skin conditions, contributing to effective, personalized treatment plans.

does a skin biopsy hurt?

During a Skin Biopsy, the area being biopsied is first numbed using a local anesthetic. There is a slight prick and burning sensation associated with the local anesthesia, but this resolves quickly, and the biopsy is then able to be performed with little to no pain.

will a skin biopsy leave a scar?

The potential for scarring depends on the type of Skin Biopsy performed and the individual’s skin type and healing response. While all Skin Biopsies have the potential to leave a small scar, our providers employ expert techniques to minimize this risk and provide guidance on scar care post-procedure. We often recommend silicon scar gel, tape, or patches as part of this care. It is imperative to follow all post-procedure instructions in order to ensure optimal healing.

what are the different types of skin biopsies?

There are three main types of Skin Biopsies– shave, punch and excisional biopsies. Shave biopsies are superficial samples of the skin. Punch biopsies use a tool to reach deeper levels of the skin. Excisional biopsies remove an entire area of suspicious skin for evaluation. The chosen biopsy type is contingent on the site and also the specific skin condition suspected.

will i need stitches/sutures?

Stitch requirements depend on the biopsy type. Shave biopsies usually don’t require sutures. Punch and excisional biopsies may require stitches depending on the depth and size of the sample taken.

how long does it take to get the results of a skin biopsy?

Results from a Skin Biopsy are generally available within one to two weeks. The specimen is sent to a laboratory where it is thoroughly analyzed under a microscope by a pathologist. We understand the waiting can be stressful and we strive to deliver the results as quickly as possible.

It is always best practice to contact the office for your results after 2 weeks if you have not yet heard back.

can a skin biopsy diagnose skin cancer?

Yes, a Skin Biopsy is the most reliable method for diagnosing skin cancer. By examining a skin sample under a microscope, pathologists can identify cancerous cells and determine the type and stage of skin cancer, if present.

what is the cost of a skin biopsy?

The cost of a Skin Biopsy varies depending on several factors including the type of biopsy, the complexity of the procedure, and the individual’s insurance coverage. It’s best to consult with your insurance provider for the specifics of coverage. At Revelus Dermatology, we strive to provide high-quality care and transparency about estimated procedural costs.
