what to expect*

preparation

Preparation for a Skin Biopsy is quite simple. The area to be biopsied will be cleansed and marked. Photographs will be taken.

Biopsies are often performed the same day and time as your visit, however there are instances in which a separate appointment may be required.

procedure

The Skin Biopsy procedure itself is quick and straightforward. The area will first be numbed with an anesthetic agent. Then, the sample of skin will be taken by either the shave, punch or excisional method. Sutures are not necessary for simple shave procedures but may be utilized for deeper biopsies. The procedure itself often only lasts a few minutes.

aftercare

Proper aftercare is vital for optimized wound healing. Detailed instructions will be provided on how to clean and protect the biopsy site. It is usually recommended to keep the site clean and dry for 24 hours after the procedure. Vaseline or Aquaphor is to be applied in the following days. Instructions will also be provided on how to monitor for signs of infection.

results + next steps

The results of a Skin Biopsy are typically returned within 1-2 weeks but may take longer. The results/findings will be communicated to you and explained. If needed, additional testing may be scheduled, and any associated treatments based on the findings will be recommended.

common skin biopsy questions

FAQ
what is a skin biopsy and why might i need one?

A skin biopsy takes a tiny sample so a pathologist can confirm or rule out diagnoses such as skin cancer, infections, or inflammatory rashes.

does a skin biopsy hurt?

You’ll feel a quick pinch and brief sting from the numbing medicine; the biopsy itself is typically painless.

what types of skin biopsies are there?

Shave (surface sample), punch (small circular core), and excisional (removes the entire spot). Your provider chooses based on location and concern.

will i need stitches?

Shave biopsies usually don’t; punch or excisional biopsies sometimes do, depending on size and depth.

how do i care for the site afterward?

Keep it clean, apply petrolatum, and cover with a bandage until a scab forms. Avoid soaking and strenuous activity for 24–48 hours.

when will i get results?

Most results return within 7–14 days. Call us if you haven’t heard from us after two weeks.

will a skin biopsy leave a scar?

Any procedure can scar, but scars are usually small. We use techniques and aftercare (e.g., silicone gel/tape) to minimize scarring.

can i shower after a skin biopsy?

You can usually shower after the first 24 hours; pat dry and reapply petrolatum and a fresh bandage.

is a skin biopsy safe if i’m on blood thinners or pregnant?

Often yes, but do not stop prescribed blood thinners without approval. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

how much does a skin biopsy cost?

Costs vary by biopsy type, location, lab fees, and insurance. We’ll provide an estimate and help you understand coverage.
