Ringworm, medically known as tinea corporis, is a common fungal skin infection that causes a circular rash with raised, scaly edges and clearer skin in the center. Despite the name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is caused by dermatophyte fungi that live on the outer layers of the skin. The infection spreads easily through direct skin contact, contact with infected animals, or shared surfaces such as gym equipment, locker rooms, and towels.
At Revelus Dermatology in South Austin, our board-certified dermatologists diagnose and treat ringworm affecting all areas of the body, including the arms, trunk, scalp (tinea capitis), feet (athlete’s foot), and groin. Ringworm is especially common in children, athletes, pet owners, and individuals living in Central Texas, where heat and humidity create an ideal environment for fungal infections.
Most cases respond well to prescription topical antifungal medications, with improvement typically seen within two to four weeks. More extensive or resistant infections may require oral antifungal treatment. If you have a persistent rash or suspect a fungal infection, our team offers same-week appointments to provide prompt diagnosis and treatment.
