common sclerotherapy questions

FAQ
what is sclerotherapy and how does it work?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure performed by an experienced provider to treat uncomplicated spider veins and smaller varicose veins.

what kinds of veins can sclerotherapy treat?

Sclerotherapy is best used to treat uncomplicated spider veins and small varicose veins. Spider veins are very small, red or blue veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are slightly larger and tend to enlarge as a result from increased pressure or weakened vein valves. You can have both types of veins present simultaneously.

what is the cost of a sclerotherapy treatment?

Every single patient is unique, and as a result, treatment plans are individualized to provide the most improved outcome. Therefore, cost varies. Plan to budget at least several hundred dollars per treatment. More than one treatment may be needed or recommended.

are sclerotherapy injections painful?

The procedure involves only mild discomfort, similar to a slight prick from the needle. Some patients may feel a mild burning or stinging sensation during the injections, but it’s generally well-tolerated.

what do i need to do after my sclerotherapy session?

Following treatment, you’ll need to wear compression stockings around the clock for a period of time. Compression stockings are designed to apply pressure to your lower legs, helping maintain blood flow, and reduce discomfort and swelling. Compression helps to ensure the best possible outcome.

You should also walk for 15 to 20 minutes immediately after treatment and daily for a few days.

can my veins come back after sclerotherapy?

Yes, it’s possible for veins to reappear after Sclerotherapy. While the treatment effectively reduces the visibility of the existing spider or varicose veins, it does not prevent new veins from forming over time. Compliance with aftercare such as wearing compression hose also plays a role in overall effectiveness of the treatment.

will i need multiple treatments?

The number and frequency of treatments depends on the severity and number of veins to be treated. Everyone is different and treatment plans are individualized. Discuss your unique situation with your provider during your consultation

how long does a sclerotherapy session take?

Depending on the size, complexity and/or number of veins to be treated, sessions can last 15 to 30 minutes on average.

what is the recovery time after sclerotherapy?

Recovery is straightforward, with most people able to resume regular activities immediately. However, it’s advisable to avoid vigorous physical activity for a few days, although walking daily is recommended. Wearing compression stockings post-treatment is also required

are there any side effects of sclerotherapy injections?

Side effects can include bruising, itching, swelling, and skin discoloration at the injection site, which usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, there can be allergic reactions or formation of small ulcers which may require medical attention.
