what to expect*

preparation

Preparation for Electrodessication is quite simple. In some cases, such as the treatment of skin cancer, you will be scheduled for a dedicated procedure time.

The area to be treated will be cleansed and marked. Photographs will be taken.

procedure

The Electrodessication procedure itself is straightforward. The area will first be numbed with a local anesthetic agent. The provider will then use a special instrument with an electrode to apply electrical current to the lesion. This heats and evaporates the tissue leading to controlled destruction. In addition to the Electrodessication, the procedure is sometimes pared with curettage – an instrument that is used to scrape affected tissue to ensure thorough removal. The procedure itself lasts about 5 minutes on average.

aftercare

Proper aftercare is vital for optimized wound healing. Detailed instructions will be provided on how to clean and protect the Electrodessication site. It is usually recommended to keep the site clean and dry for 24 hours after the procedure. Vaseline or Aquaphor is to be applied in the following days. Instructions will also be provided on how to monitor for signs of infection. Any mobility or exercise limitations will also be discussed. Not following proper aftercare instructions increases the risk of scarring and other wound related complications.

Note, there are no sutures required for an Electrodessication procedure.

resuts + next steps

After Electrodessication, it is important to keep all regularly scheduled follow-ups to ensure that the area heals well. Depending on the nature of the lesion, periodic skin checks might be recommended to monitor for any recurrence or the emergence of new lesions.
