what to expect*

preparation

Before the procedure, you’ll have an initial consultation with your provider. During this consultation, the provider will thoroughly examine and measure the lipoma and discuss your medical history to ensure the best approach for your unique case. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns you might have. Photographs will be taken. You will then be scheduled for a dedicated surgical time slot on a subsequent visit. A price estimate will be provided.

procedure

On the day of your Lipoma Removal, you’ll be asked to arrive early for numbing. The procedure will begin by cleansing the area around the lipoma to maintain a sterile environment. The local anesthesia will be injected and soon take effect, ensuring that you won’t experience any pain during the procedure. Using precise techniques, the provider will carefully remove the lipoma. You might feel some pressure, but rest assured, you’ll be in capable hands, and your comfort is our top priority (your comfort is a priority).

The lipoma will be sent off to pathology for evaluation.

aftercare

Detailed instructions will be provided on how to clean and protect the treated area(s). Wound care typically involves keeping the area clean and dry for at least 24 hours. Vaseline or Aquaphor can be applied in the following days.

Most times, sutures are placed during the procedure, and it is important to keep the site(s) clean and moist, as to avoid scab formation. You will also be counseled on any physical limitations such as lifting that you may need to adhere to in order to promote optimal healing. Finally, instructions will be provided (instructions will be reviewed) on how to monitor for signs of infection.

resuts + next steps

Following your Lipoma Removal procedure, you can expect some mild swelling and redness around the treated area. These effects are normal and typically subside within a short period. If stitches were required for closure, they will be discussed (can be reviewed) with you during the aftercare instructions. You’ll schedule a quick follow-up appointment in approximately 10-14 days to monitor your healing progress and to remove the stitches.

The pathology results are typically returned within 1-2 weeks, but may take longer. The results/findings will be communicated to you and explained.

Depending on the size and location of the lipoma, stitches might be needed to close the wound. Our providers will determine the appropriate approach for your specific case and provide aftercare instructions for proper wound care.

will a lipoma removal leave a scar?

The potential for scarring depends on the individual’s skin type and healing response. While all surgical procedures have the potential to leave a scar, our providers employ expert techniques to minimize this risk and provide guidance on scar care post-procedure.

It is also imperative for a patient to follow all post-procedure instructions in order to ensure optimal healing.
