what to expect*

preparation

If you and your healthcare provider decide that Patch Testing is right for you, we will first call and review insurance benefits/costs. Once this information is obtained, we will contact you to schedule your Patch Testing week.

3 visits are required to complete the testing. They take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the same week.

It is important to note that once the patches are placed on your back on Monday, you cannot get your back wet until the testing is complete on Friday. Please plan accordingly.

procedure

On Monday, approximately 80 small adhesive patches are placed on the upper and mid back. They are taped down and marked with a skin marker.

On your return visit on Wednesday, the patches will be removed, and the markings will be touched up.

As it can take another 24-48 hours for the skin to react, you will be asked to return on Friday at which time a final reading of the test will take place.

aftercare

During the week of testing, you may find that your back feels itchy. This is normal.

We do ask that you avoid antihistamines during testing.

resuts + next steps

Once your results are reviewed and interpreted on Friday, you will be provided with a detailed list and information about your specific allergies and sensitivities.

Your information will also be uploaded to the ACDS database, which will generate a special product list for you. You will be able to print this list or access it via your phone.

The list will contain all products that you can safely use, from make-up to household products. It will eliminate anything that contains one of your allergens.

It is important to reference your list whenever shopping for or using a new product or topical medication. Strict adherence to the list generally reduces or eliminates future flares and allows for improved quality of life.

common patch testing questions

FAQ
what is patch testing?

Patch Testing is a diagnostic method used to identify specific substances that may be causing allergic skin reactions, such as contact dermatitis.

how is patch testing done?

Small amounts of potential allergens are applied to the skin, typically on the back, using adhesive patches. Each allergen is kept separate to prevent cross-reactivity. It takes place over three visits in the same week. Visits usually are scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

what are the side effects of patch testing?

Side effects are generally mild but can include itching, redness, or blistering at the test sites. In rare cases, a person might experience a more severe or systemic allergic reaction.

what is the cost of patch testing?

Coverage varies among insurance providers. It’s important to check with your insurance company to understand the coverage specifics and any out-of-pocket costs. At Revelus Dermatology, we strive to provide high-quality care and transparency about estimated procedural costs.

does patch testing hurt?

No. Patch Testing sessions are painless. There are no shots or pricks involved.

can patch testing also tell me about food allergies?

No, Patch Testing is designed to identify contact allergens that cause allergic reactions on the skin, such as contact dermatitis. It is not a tool used to diagnose food allergies. Food allergies are typically diagnosed using other methods, including skin prick tests, blood tests, or oral food challenges. If you suspect you have a food allergy, it’s essential to consult with an allergist or another appropriate medical professional who can guide you through the appropriate testing and diagnostic procedures.

which allergens are you testing for with patch testing?

At Revelus Dermatology, we use the American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) Core Allergen Series, which is a set of over 80 common allergens that are most frequently responsible for allergic contact dermatitis in North America. Some examples include nickel sulfate, fragrance mix, paraben mix, and neomycin sulfate. The specific allergens in the series might vary slightly over time as new data becomes available and as substances in products change.
